Zhi neng qigong

I n t r o d u c t i o n

There are more then 2000 types of qigong registered in China. Unofficially probably more then 4000. To name a
few, there are medical qigongs, Daoïst qigongs , buddhist qigongs & martial arts qigongs.

Zhi neng qigong is wisdom-qigong.

Purpose of zhineng qigong

Zhineng qigong is an 'open information system'.While traditional forms work mostly with internal dantian qi, znqg
works also with external hunyuan qi.

The goal of zhineng qigong is described by Dr. Pang as such : ' To gain knowledge of the universal laws and
through exercise applying that knowledge within the context of nature, men & society. This way one is able to
create a giant leap from the domain of certainties to the kingdom of freedom.'

The qi-field - The field of information

The concept of a qi-field (qì chang) originates in old Buddhist and Daoïst traditions. While sitting in meditation, for
protection a monk would visualize the Buddha above him, left and right of him the dragon and spiritual tiger and
other powerful deïties to ward off danger from all directions. To build a qi-field , one could say, is more or less the
same without the identification with the tiger and the dragon.

'The qi-field is how the universe expresses it's many functions and remembers its countless experiences. In
traditional Daoïst cosmology the qi-field defines every possible relation between the form- and formless world. It's
coherence allows the movement between chaos and order without losing balance' . ('How the alchemist shapes
the qi-field' - Michael Winn)

Every object, being, location or time has a qi-field. This is nothing mysterious. F. i. when you're traveling and
sitting or standing next to someone you haven't actually seen yet, you can still get a pleasant or less pleasant
feeling. In other words, you know a person's qi-field before you've actually seen him or her. The same goes for
different locations. You might feel at ease or not, at different places for no apparent reason. Meaning the
information of a particular location resonates within you and evokes a feeling. This is something else then
rationalizing all the pro's & con's of a particular situation or person afterwards. Here is meant the instant
knowlegde coming into consciousness about a person, situation or particular location.

Practice & Theory (brief summery)

Zhineng qigong has 6 levels (methods) or sets of exercises.
There is no hiearchy in zhineng qigong, only structure. Dr. Pang himself stresses that everyone ought to be called
'teacher'. Meaning if we are willing to learn, we can learn from anyone or anything. So no 'gurufication' within
zhineng qigong. If some teacher insists on being called 'master' or even 'grandmaster', then there's only one thing
you should do : run! There's lots of other ways of showing respect & grattitude.

The effectiveness of Zhineng qigong has been scientifically researched for many years at the Huaxia center in
Beijing. Only a small part of the research work has been translated uptill now.

Method 1

bclaqi

The most elementary exercise in znqg. Placing the hands in front of the navel and making an open-close
movement with hands & arms. Mind's intention going far away & deep inside.

Dr. Pang once said that all people would need is the la-qi exercise, but then noboby would believe him because
this was 'too simple to be true'. . . .

Peng qi guan ding fa or 'lift qi up - pour qi down'

Exercise to exchange external & internal qi. The open-close movement of qi (kai- he) is the basic movement
of this exercise. While znqg is rooted in old traditions, the rolling of the shoulders (tui -rou) could be called
'modern' touch.

The focus of the '3 centres merge standing meditation' is filling up the lower dantian quickly and used
as a bridging-exercise while transitioning between different stages of practice.

Dun qian fa or 'wallsquats'
An activating exercise to create more 'space' in the 'ming men' area (lower back) and consequently creating more
space for energy in the lower dantian.

Take a short look at the video and I'll explain why this kind of practice will generally cause a lot of injuries.
As you can imagine, the arches in the neck (ouch!) and in the lower back (more ouch!) will block the qi. This is
excactly what we don't want with this exercise. We like to get the 'qi-pump' in a free flowing state .This can only
happen when the whole spine is relaxed & not one vertebra is being 'crunched'. The arches in the neck and lower
back are bent the other way around (round - not hollow!).
A nice touch in this example is the little 'hop' when our friend is moving upwards again. This is clearly not a case
of 'moving the qi' , when you compare to this :

Since asian bodies are 'constructed' a bit different, it is easier for asians to perform the wallsquat. Caucasians can
make this exercise a bit easier by standing a little bit from the wall ( max. 20 cm), when starting with this
exercise. As well as lifting the heels by putting a book or something else under them (max. 2cm). This to prevent
falling backwards when squatting all the way down.
If you'd like to practice 'Wallsquats , look for an instructor in your neighbourhood and have someone experienced
check you, while you're at it.

Goal of method 1:

Practicioners of level 1 are considered to be able to ward of all diseases & help others as well. For your own
healing skills check the Garlick Experiment.

There are 6 levels of practice.

Method 1 (Peng qi guan ding fa) - control over exchange of intermal & external qi
Method 2 (Xing Shen Zhuang) control over internal qi (deep into the far corners of the body)
Method 3 (Wu Yuan Zhuang) control over qi of the organs (emotions)
Method 4, 5 & 6 for controlling the mind. The last 3 methods have never been instructed.

It is quite impossible to describe the depth of consciousness emitting from the work of Dr. Pang Ming. Allready
more then aquainted with several forms of taiji & qigong he a graduated at age 18 in western medical science,
Dr. Pang became a quiet famous doctor in China ( in both western & traditional science ). Besides this he has
mastered several traditions in qigong & taiji ( like buddhist-qigong , daoïst qigong , martial arts ) & studied with
19 different Grandmasters. Dr. Pang Ming insists on calling everyone 'teacher'. So structure : yes - no hiearchy.

Tanzhe si

This is the temple, 30 miles south of Beijing , were Dr. Pang Ming developed zhineng qigong. In 1991 the Huaxia
zhineng qigong trainingscenter was established.

Because of the effectiveness of the programs being offered, zhineng qigong became rapidly a very popular form.
This was also scientifically tested and among the 13 most popular gong-forms in China, zhineng qigong turned out
the most effective. They moved regularly to bigger sites and recovery & research departement were also included
into the project.Dr. Pang gave an interview for 'Heaven & Earth' magazine 1994, called 'Nature as a last Resort'.

Already starting with the building of a beautiful new training - recovery & research complex, all 'gong' forms were
banned when the 'falun gong' movement (or 'sect') was becoming a threat to the chinese gouvernement. More
precisely, anyone practising any kind of 'gong' form, was not allowed to practice with a group of more then 200
people. Still isn't...Because the center was accomodating up to 4000 'students' , it had to be closed down. Within
a few weeks time....

Since then Dr. Pang Ming and his wife have lived a 'quiet' life in Beijing, and have been under constant
surveillance. The fact that he has chosen to live a low profile life has to be understood as an act of great sacrifice.

The 'gong' situation today has loosened up a little and the practice of qigong will no doubtly flourish again on
chinese soil. In the meantime we will keep our spirits high and take good care of the things we've learned so far,
and cherish the knowlegde which has become so dear to us.
